Blue-footed boobies are among the most recognizable birds in the Galapagos Islands. Their bright blue feet, distinctive courtship dances, and remarkable diving ability make them one of the wildlife species travelers hope to see during a Galapagos cruise.

These seabirds are found on several islands throughout the archipelago, but North Seymour is particularly well known for its large populations of blue-footed boobies. The island also supports important populations of frigatebirds, swallow-tailed gulls, and other seabirds.

Why Do Blue-Footed Boobies Have Blue Feet?

The courtship dance is easiest to appreciate when you slow down and watch one bird for a while. A male may lift one foot and then the other, drawing attention to their color as he displays to a potential mate. You might also notice the birds pointing their bills upward or interacting around a nesting area. Your guide can help explain what is happening without disturbing the colony.
Their behavior at sea looks entirely different. From the shore or a boat, watch for birds flying over the water and suddenly plunging beneath its surface in pursuit of fish. These moments can happen quickly, so a pair of binoculars is useful even if you have a camera. A sighting on land may reveal courtship or nesting activity, while time on the water offers a better chance to appreciate their hunting ability.
Wildlife encounters vary with the itinerary, conditions, and the birds’ activity on the day. If this species is high on your wish list, ask which visitor sites are included before booking. Once there, remain within the permitted area and let the animals set the pace of the encounter. Watching from a respectful distance also gives you a better chance to observe natural behavior.

The blue color of their feet comes from pigments associated with their diet and overall health. During courtship, the male displays his feet as part of an elaborate dance designed to attract a mate.

Blue-footed boobies are also excellent hunters. They can dive from considerable heights into the ocean to catch fish, turning their awkward-looking movements on land into impressive displays of agility at sea.
