How High Is Machu Picchu? Elevation, Altitude and Acclimatization

Machu Picchu elevation sits at approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, high enough to notice, but actually lower than Cusco, where most travelers start their trip. That gap matters more than the citadel’s own elevation, and it’s the main thing to plan around before booking any of our Machu Picchu tours.

Travelers combining a multi-day trek with their visit face a different altitude profile again, since routes like the one covered in our Salkantay trek itinerary climb well above both Cusco and Machu Picchu. For general trip-planning context beyond altitude, see our Peru travel guide.

Machu Picchu Elevation: How High Is It, Exactly?

The archaeological site sits at about 2,430 m (7,970 ft). For comparison, that’s roughly the elevation of many ski resort base areas in Colorado, noticeable, but well within a range most healthy travelers adjust to without serious difficulty.

How Does It Compare to Cusco?

Cusco sits considerably higher, at approximately 3,400 m (11,150 ft), about 1,000 meters above Machu Picchu itself. This is the detail most first-time visitors miss: the altitude challenge almost always happens in Cusco, not at the citadel.

What About the Inca Trail and Other Treks?

Trekking routes typically climb higher still. The classic Inca Trail crosses Dead Woman’s Pass at around 4,215 m (13,828 ft), and the Salkantay route climbs even higher before descending toward Machu Picchu’s lower elevation.

How Should You Acclimatize?

Most travel medicine guidance recommends spending at least one to two nights in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before attempting strenuous activity, staying well hydrated, and avoiding a same-day jump from sea level to a high mountain pass.

Who Should Be Most Careful?

Travelers with cardiac or respiratory conditions, and anyone who has experienced altitude sickness before, should talk to a travel medicine provider ahead of time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Machu Picchu itself hard on the body because of altitude? Less than most people expect, the citadel is lower than Cusco.

Do I need altitude medication for Machu Picchu? Not necessarily for the citadel alone, though trekkers going over high passes often discuss preventive options with a doctor.

How many days should I spend in Cusco before Machu Picchu? At least one full day of light activity is a reasonable minimum.

Machu Picchu’s official elevation and protected boundaries are documented by UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre. For medical guidance, the U.S. CDC’s travel health guidance on altitude sickness covers symptoms and prevention.
