Journey into the Amazon & Sunset on Laguna Grande
AM: Your adventure begins with a scenic transfer from Lago Agrio to the entrance of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. After a short orientation, board a motorized canoe and travel deep into the rainforest along winding rivers surrounded by lush vegetation.
During the journey, your naturalist guide will help you spot monkeys, sloths, colorful birds, river turtles, and other Amazon wildlife. Upon arrival at Bamboo Lodge, settle into your comfortable accommodation before heading out in a traditional paddle canoe to explore the magnificent Laguna Grande, one of the reserve's most iconic locations.
As the sun begins to set, keep an eye out for the legendary Amazon pink river dolphins, often seen swimming through the calm waters. Weather permitting, enjoy a refreshing swim before returning to the lodge. After dinner, venture out on a night canoe excursion to search for caimans, owls, bats, frogs, and other nocturnal creatures.
Silent Canoeing Through the Rainforest
AM: Today is dedicated to exploring the Amazon at its most peaceful. Paddle through the secluded Cananbueno Lagoon, a protected area where motorized boats are not permitted, allowing you to experience the rainforest in complete silence.
This quiet navigation greatly increases your chances of observing wildlife, including squirrel monkeys, capuchins, hoatzins, kingfishers, toucans, and giant trees reflected in the still black waters.
After enjoying a picnic lunch in the forest, take a short guided nature walk before paddling back to the lodge. Spend the afternoon relaxing in a hammock or, depending on weather conditions, return to Laguna Grande to witness another spectacular Amazon sunset. In the evening, those interested may join an optional night walk to discover the fascinating world of insects, amphibians, spiders, and other nocturnal rainforest inhabitants.
Indigenous Culture & Rainforest Discovery
AM: Travel by canoe to the Siona Indigenous Community of Puerto Bolívar, where you will gain insight into the traditions and daily life of one of the Amazon's ancestral cultures.
Learn how cassava (yuca), one of the region's staple foods, is cultivated and transformed into traditional cassava bread using techniques passed down through generations. This authentic cultural experience offers a unique opportunity to connect with the people who have lived in harmony with the rainforest for centuries.
In the afternoon, explore the rainforest on a guided hike through different ecosystems, including terra firme forest, flooded forest, and palm swamps. Along the way, your expert guide will introduce you to medicinal plants, towering ceiba trees, fascinating insects, and the incredible biodiversity that has made Cuyabeno one of the richest ecosystems on Earth, with more than 500 bird species, hundreds of fish species, and an astonishing variety of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.
Sunrise Birdwatching & Return
AM: Wake early to experience one of the Amazon's most magical moments as the forest comes alive at sunrise. From the observation tower—and, weather permitting, during a final paddle across Laguna Grande—look for toucans, aracaris, parrots, macaws, oropendolas, kingfishers, and many other colorful bird species.
After breakfast, begin your final canoe journey through the reserve, enjoying one last opportunity to observe wildlife before returning to Lago Agrio, bringing your unforgettable Amazon experience to a close.
