La Selva was one of the first rainforest lodges of its kind in all of Ecuador, paving the way for the unique brand of high-end, sustainable eco-tourism that has contributed so much to the preservation of the rainforest and many other delicate ecosystems throughout the region. It has been at the forefront of both preservation and rainforest luxury, making it the ideal place for unwinding. But the luxury is manifested in what matters most: the explorations. Here, you will take in everything this alluring land has to offer. The approach is authentic and insightful; with the best guides in the region who are, without exaggerating, “synchronized” with the jungle. Hence, get an up-close encounter with this mosaic of life forms; watch how a tiny ant can impact a whole acre of territory, to a large tapir being chased by a jaguar. Perhaps you will be lucky enough to watch an epic fight between an anaconda and a caiman. The insights are cultural as well. Experience unique programs coordinated with local indigenous communities. Have the chance to appreciate their lifestyle and their harmony with nature. Surely, this view will give you a great impression for you to take home and onwards into your daily life. This is the true Amazon Safari; welcome to one of the best luxury Amazon lodges in Ecuador. The individual suites have been constructed using techniques adopted by native forest communities, with no expense spared on the level of comfort they provide. Panoramic views, thatched roofs, four-poster beds, river-view balconies and locally-inspired spa products in the cabin bathrooms are just the beginning of the story. La Selva prides itself on responsible and sustainable ecotourism in every way, from the locally sourced ingredients in each carefully prepared meal to the educational programs and excursions run by specialist guides. Talking about food, you will be offered a complete range of it – from the delicious and “friendly” flavors of the international cuisine to the most typical and exotic ones. A guide may suddenly stop you mid-excursion, start chopping a rotting stump to reveal a nest of lemon ants (quite a delicacy), or a friendlier “challenge” may be trying a deep-fried piranha. Although it is a matter of taste, we at Surtrek enjoy them – at least when Jose – the chef – prepares them. With a prime location just off the banks of the Napo River; an abundance of local flora and fauna can be enjoyed with minimal effort, and the nearby observation tower will offer once-in-a-lifetime views across the vast rainforest canopy. All this, and more, cement La Selva’s rightful place as one of the leading luxury eco-lodges anywhere in Ecuador, and indeed South America. Thus, this makes a formidable “setting” able to operate any kind of trips. Think of the Amazon with children; La Selva is a family-friendly lodge that includes special programs for children. Honeymoon in the Amazon is also made possible here. In fact, very few places are able to truly support this kind of experience. As you may have already figured just by reading our description above, this retreat is more than perfect for this. However let us mention one additional, really nice feature: Amazon Spa… Just that... Once again, La Selva definitely has inspired other lodges and even the tourism in this area in itself. But more admirable is how it has inspired guests. And it will continue to improve, evolve, adapt… Maybe this time, you will allow us to be part of this beautiful cycle.

Itinerary Details

Quito – La Selva Lodge

AM: At the Quito airport, a Surtrek representative will help you with your luggage and tickets (though note that transportation from your hotel to the Quito airport is available for those guests who need it). After a short (35 minute) flight to Coca, you will be met by another English-speaking representative of La Selva Amazon Eco-lodge, who will welcome you to Coca, help you with your luggage, and transfer you and your fellow guests to the pier, where a motorized canoe will be waiting. La Selva Lodge is located about two hours from Coca by a motorized canoe, which is covered in case of inclement weather (such as rain or strong sunshine). The ride itself is fun and interesting! A box lunch is provided for guests on the ride. The motorized canoe cannot go into the lagoon where the lodge is located, so you will disembark on the river for a short walk and a ride in another, smaller canoe. Your luggage will be handled for you. Once you reach La Selva Lodge, there is a welcome cocktail and brief orientation meeting. Then you’ll be shown to your spacious rooms and given the chance to rest and explore a bit before dinner at 7:30. During dinner, your group and guide will discuss the activities for the following day. After dinner, depending on the weather and the will of the group, there may be a short activity such as night wildlife walk or canoe ride near the lodge to see some wildlife. Many guests prefer to relax in the lounge with a cold drink from the bar or have a soothing massage at the spa!

PM:

AM: Breakfast will be served early because there is so much to see and do! There are a number of activities that you might do, including a visit to the parrot clay lick, a trip to a local community, or an excursion to the observation tower to see birds and monkeys. What activity you do will depend on many factors, including the weather and what the group wants to do. If you do not wish to do the morning activity, you are under no obligation to do so. Many guests prefer to remain in the lodge’s comfortable lodge and relax. Delicious lunches are served in the lodge’s dining room at 12:30. After lunch, guests can take a nap or read a book during the hottest hours of the day. Afternoon activities tend to be more low-key than the morning ones. You might go for a canoe ride around the lagoon, take a short trail to hopefully see pygmy marmosets, or visit the nearby butterfly farm if it’s raining hard. Again, the activity will be decided at the last moment by the guide, depending on conditions. A gourmet dinner will await in the lodge’s dining room as afternoon turns into evening. After dinner, depending on the weather and the will of the group, there may be a short evening activity such as night wildlife walk or canoe ride near the lodge to see some wildlife. Many guests prefer to relax in the lounge with a cold drink from the bar or have a soothing massage at the spa!

PM:

AM: Today, riding in a motorized canoe along the Napo River, we will make our way to one of the most fascinating rainforest displays: A parrot clay lick. Armed with your trusty pair of binoculars, you will have a chance to witness the hundreds of parrots and parakeets that gather here daily to eat the mineral-rich soil, which is an important ingredient in their diet. Following the clay lick experience, we will make contact with the local indigenous community, as you are welcomed into the Amazonian Kichua center by local women, who will talk with us about the lives of the Kichua in the Amazon. This exchange will provide you with a special and unique opportunity to learn about the true day-to-day life of peoples in the Amazon. After lunch, we will head out along the Ceiba Trail for Lake Garzacocha, which is one of the most beautiful bodies of water in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Along the way and once there, you will have plenty of chances to spot monkeys, birds and even families of Squirrel monkeys and Capuchin monkeys in search of food. While the raucous roaring of Howler monkeys can’t be missed, you’ll have to keep a sharp eye out for Pigmy Marmoset, the smallest monkeys in the world. At the same time, in the trees above and flying overhead, colorful birds like toucans, macaws and the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin can also be seen. Later in the evening, you can go on an optional nocturnal jungle walk, at which time you can take in the full orchestra of the sound of the rainforest at night. Similarly, you can see some amazing spectacles that only occur after sundown, so make sure to bring a flashlight for this amazing experience.

PM:

AM: Breakfast will be served, although you must depart the lodge early to get to Coca in time for your flight. You’ll leave the same way you arrived: a canoe ride followed by a short walk, and then a two-hour ride on the motorized canoe to Coca. An English-speaking representative will accompany you. Once you reach Coca, you will be taken to the airport, checked in and directed to the waiting room for your return flight to Quito. That will be the end of your Amazon rainforest adventure! We only hope that you will tell your friends and return to visit La Selva Lodge someday.

AM: Following a hearty Amazonian breakfast, and after a 20-minute walk, we will make our way to the lodge’s observation tower – an amazing structure that allows adventurers to climb 120 feet above the forest canopy. Perched high above the forest floor, your naturalist guide will help you sight brilliantly colored birds, monkeys and other wildlife of the Amazon. After this heady experience, you will have the option of hiking along the Tucaneta Trail, where your indigenous guide can point out many of the medicinal plants that are still used in the rainforest today. Likewise, your naturalist guide will share fascinating information about the fragile ecology and the natural history of the Amazon basin. Following lunch, we will continue with a 3-to 4-hour trek through an amazing primary forest ecosystem where you will have chances to discover some of the largest mammals of the rainforest, including peccaries (wild pigs), deer and tapir. Eventually, we will reach the shore of Mandi Cocha where we will get into a fiberglass canoe and paddle through the amazing flooded black-water Igapo Forest. In addition to finding a host of different bird species of birds, if we’re especially lucky we may even encounter the elusive Giant river otter.
