Arrival in Bogotá

AM: Welcome to Colombia, a country that captivates with its diversity, color, and warmth. Located in the northernmost part of South America, Colombia is a vibrant tourist destination that combines lush nature, rich culture, and unparalleled hospitality.

An international flight will bring us to Bogotá, the capital of Colombia! This vibrant city, located at 2,600 meters above sea level, is the heart of Colombia and one of South America's premier cultural destinations. The historic district of La Candelaria boasts museums, galleries, and national monuments, as well as stunning historical architecture. This city offers a fascinating blend of history, culture, and modernity. Upon arrival, we will be met and transferred to our hotel, where we will spend the first few nights of our trip.

AM: In the morning, we will depart for the town of Zipaquirá, located just 48 kilometers north of Bogotá (1.5 hours). Here, we will visit the majestic Salt Cathedral, a former salt mine transformed into an architectural and spiritual marvel. We will explore the mine's tunnels and descend into the depths of the cathedral, situated 180 meters underground. As we enter its depths, we will be immersed in a mystical atmosphere, illuminated by stunning light displays that highlight the natural salt formations and religious sculptures carved by expert artisans. The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is considered one of the most remarkable architectural and artistic achievements in Colombian architecture, earning it the title of an architectural jewel of modernity.

PM: Next, we'll visit the town of Zipaquirá and return to the city, heading to El Dorado International Airport for our domestic flight to the Coffee Region. Upon arrival, a private transfer will be waiting to take us to a beautiful property where we'll spend the next few nights.

This magical corner of the country, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a true visual gem. Its valleys, surrounded by majestic mountains, are home to charming and colorful little towns. Vast hills covered in an emerald-green blanket of coffee plantations create a symphony of colors, textures, and aromas, forming an unforgettable visual canvas. The gentle undulations of the terrain reveal the careful work of generations of farmers who have cultivated coffee with passion and dedication. This region will invite you to immerse yourself in the history of coffee, the lush nature, and the warm local hospitality.

AM: After breakfast, we'll visit the Cocora Valley. This valley, nestled in the Andes Mountains, is famous for its wax palms, the tallest palm species in the world and a national symbol of Colombia. The majestic wax palms, towering in the sky like imposing guardians, will offer us the opportunity to capture unforgettable images. These palms, which can reach extraordinary heights, create a unique and surreal landscape. Their presence in the valley is so special that these palms are considered a natural and cultural heritage of Colombia. On a hike along its trails, we'll discover the diverse flora and fauna that thrive in this unique environment.

PM: Next, we'll visit Salento and Filandia, both towns nestled in the rolling hills of Colombia's Coffee Region. These charming villages blend the authenticity of rural life with the vibrancy of their colorful architecture and rich traditions. Their brightly colored houses will captivate you at first sight. The vibrant facades, adorned with wooden balconies and painted doors, create a picturesque and welcoming atmosphere. We'll stroll along their cobblestone streets and discover the architectural richness that reveals the history of these towns. The authenticity of daily life in the villages of this region is reflected in the friendliness of its people. We'll take a well-deserved break for lunch at a typical restaurant, savoring the local cuisine and recharging our batteries to continue exploring.

AM: Today we'll venture out to explore two true hidden gems in the heart of Colombia's Coffee Region: the captivating towns of Pijao and Buenavista. Our day begins in the charming town of Barcelona, where we'll switch vehicles to iconic Willys Jeeps. These classic vehicles, steeped in history and regional culture, will guide us to hidden treasures, promising a truly unique experience.

We'll begin our journey in Pijao, the heart of Quindío and the first town in Latin America to join Cittaslow, an association that advocates for a sustainable lifestyle. With its distinctive snail carved into its doors, Pijao symbolizes the philosophy of living peacefully, using natural methods, and maintaining a high quality of life. We'll visit Café La Floresta, the shop of a traditional organic farm, where each cup tells the story of the farmers and baristas—dedicated artisans who produce, process, and prepare each bean using unique methods. By enjoying a cup of coffee here, we'll not only experience exceptional aromas and flavors but also directly support local coffee growers, contributing to the well-being and prosperity of local communities.

PM: Our next stop is Buenavista, known as "The Quindío Viewpoint." This town, literally located "a block from heaven," offers spectacular views of Quindío and the northern part of Valle del Cauca from every corner. Distinguished by its harmony with nature and local culture, Buenavista immerses us in the tranquility of the place, embracing a relaxed pace of life. We will continue to Finca Alsacia, where we will learn about the moving story of Don Leo, from his beginnings as a coffee picker to the challenges he overcame to build his own project. His focus on specialty coffee cultivation and his commitment to economic stability and bonuses for his workers make all the difference. This social and human project, aimed at

the most disadvantaged, translates into an authentic experience upon arriving at the farm, where we will confirm the truth of his story. Finally, we will return to Barcelona and transfer to the transportation that will take us back to the hotel.

AM: In the morning, we will head back to Matecaña International Airport to catch our flight to Medellín. There, private transportation will be waiting to take us to our hotel in the El Poblado area.

PM: Once considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Medellín has shed its bad reputation and is now more commonly known as "The City of Eternal Spring," treating residents and visitors to warm temperatures year-round. Medellín is situated in the Aburrá Valley and surrounded by seven hills that offer excellent views of the city.

AM: We'll begin our tour of Medellín's most iconic landmarks, discovering how resilience and creativity are the very essence of this constantly evolving city. Our first stop will take us to Parque de la Inflexión (Park of the Turning Point), a profoundly symbolic space built on the former site of one of Pablo Escobar's residences. Today, an imposing black stone wall, 70 meters long and 5 meters high, honors the memory of the 46,612 victims of violence and stands as a symbol of hope, peace, and social reconstruction.

Next, we'll continue to one of Medellín's most innovative transportation systems: the Metrocable. As we gently rise above the city's neighborhoods, we'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views and learn the fascinating story of how this mode of transport became a symbol of social integration and urban transformation.

Next, we'll begin a short walk to Botero Plaza, a vibrant cultural space in the heart of the city. Here, the monumental bronze sculptures of renowned Colombian artist Fernando Botero bring life and character to this open-air plaza.

PM: After lunch at a typical local restaurant, we'll head to Comuna 13, a neighborhood that has undergone a remarkable transformation. Here, we'll see how the Hip Hop movement has not only been an artistic expression but also a transformative force rebuilding the social fabric, instilling hope, and forging a brighter future for this resilient community.

AM: Today we depart again for José María Córdova International Airport, from where we will take our final domestic flight to the beautiful city of Cartagena. There, our driver will be ready to transfer us to the hotel, marking the beginning of our stay in this fascinating destination.

PM: After lunch, we'll take a guided walk to the Getsemaní neighborhood, a former working-class district that is now a symbol of cultural resistance and urban transformation. Its cobblestone streets are adorned with colorful murals, festive banners, and a creative energy that has made it an epicenter of artistic expression and local life. We'll discover its rebellious history, its plazas steeped in tradition, and the bohemian and authentic atmosphere that sets it apart from the rest of the walled city.

More than just a walk, this experience allows us to live the essence of Cartagena: a city where the colonial and the contemporary coexist in harmony, and where every corner speaks to us of its vibrant soul, its deep history and its always welcoming spirit.

Cartagena, a captivating Caribbean coastal city, invites us to immerse ourselves in a unique fusion of its enchanting ancient history and vibrant modernity. We'll wander the cobblestone streets of the walled city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where imposing stone walls with over 400 years of history stretch for 13 km. Discover an intricate labyrinth of pastel-colored houses, colonial architecture, churches, and historical sites.

AM: Today we'll dedicate a large part of the day to enjoying a unique experience aboard an exclusive catamaran cruise. We'll embark at the Bodeguita Pier, facing the majestic walled city of Cartagena, where a welcome cocktail will greet us to begin this magical and relaxing day. We'll sail across Cartagena Bay, heading towards the paradisiacal Rosario Islands. Upon reaching Isla Grande, we'll stop near the vibrant reefs to anchor for approximately an hour and a half. This will be the perfect time to enjoy a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters or explore the seabed with a snorkeling session, surrounded by stunning marine life.

PM: After a delicious appetizer, we'll raise anchor and continue our voyage, exploring more of the beautiful Rosario Islands. At Caribarú Island, we'll anchor off a dreamy beach, where we'll enjoy a delicious lunch prepared on board while admiring the surrounding tropical scenery. Drinks such as water, sparkling water, soft drinks, juices, and lemonades are complimentary and available at your leisure throughout the excursion . After lunch, we'll have time for a second swim in the turquoise waters, relaxing and enjoying the serenity of the Caribbean. To conclude this unforgettable experience, we'll raise anchor and sail back, gliding across the blue waters of the Caribbean Sea as we head back to La Bodeguita Pier, the starting point of our adventure.

AM: Enjoy a free day to explore every corner of the walled city at your leisure, a place brimming with history, life, and color. Wander its narrow cobblestone streets, admire its colorful facades, and discover its charming squares. Visit its most prominent monuments and savor the delicious local cuisine.

AM: Today our extraordinary journey through magical Colombia comes to an end. Comfortable transportation will pick us up at the hotel and take us to Rafael Núñez International Airport, where we will board our return flight. This closing marks the end of unforgettable days filled with discoveries, experiences, and the unparalleled cultural and natural richness that Colombia has to offer. Until next time, Colombia!

Wonderful trip We were so taken care of by Surtrek on a recent family trip to Equador and the Galapagos (travelers ages 8-77). Our Surtrek guide Maite worked with us to design a trip that focused on the items we wanted to be sure to see, and our timeframe and budget. Local guides and the boat tour she outsourced were wonderful. We felt so comfortable every step of the way for what would have otherwise been confusing travel. We definitely would recommend this company to others!

Ultimate fun, minimized hassles, amazing tour operation and travel agency I've had several people ask me what the highlight of our Quito, Ecuador and Galapagos Islands trip was, and frankly it's hard to pinpoint anyone thing so I tend to tell them: all 8 days! Our trip started with being greeted and picked up by our amazing travel agent, Maite. She was delightful from start to finish. Easy to communicate with via email, phone, and whatsapp. Maite consistently made sure we had what we needed. Surtrek supplied our driver, Christian, and our tour guide in Quito, Juan. Christian was a great driver. He knew the roads inside and out and we always felt safe. Juan probably knows everything about Ecuador -- and interestingly also Chicago! The time in Quito was fabulous. We enjoyed seeing the sites of the city and the cloud forest nearby. We ate delicious food and really had a treat with great weather. Maite and Christian got us to the airport for our trip to Galapagos and made sure we were smoothly through security. I've never had such personal service! Our time on the Horizon was fabulous. The staff onboard were top to bottom great. From the tour coordinator to the housekeeping to the culinary to the guide and of course the folks who drove the dinghys that got us to and from every activity. The food was top knotch with a lot of variety. The activities were fun and not overly strenuous, but also not lethargic. A nice balance.I was pleasantly surprised that in November there were no bugs, so no need for bug spray. Of course plenty of need for sun screen still! But the temps were great. High 70's and low 80's Fahrenheit. We saw basically everything in the Galapagos: penguins, blue and red footed boobies, frigate birds, owl, land and marine iguanas, sea lions everywhere, and of course the giant tortoises! During snorkeling we had [small and hammerhead] sharks in the water with us, sea lions in the water, schools of brilliant fish, and 1 amazing encounter with a sea turtle only feet away from my mask. It was breathtaking. Some folks say later in the summer is the best time because the water is clearer, but in our case the water was still quite clear and the animals were much closer to the surface, so it worked great. And the crew provided us with wet suits, so that helped with buoyancy and with warmth. After Galapagos we were shocked to have Maite and Christian back with us at the airport. We expected since our planned activities with Surtrek were done that we wouldn't see them again, but no they were there to meet us again and make sure we transited to our final hotel for a few hours sleep before the final trip home. It was a very pleasant surprise, and frankly just made it so much simpler than being "on our own".The coffee, the chocolate, the hummingbird sanctuary, all the beautiful sites. Dessert all the time. Just a really great trip!I'd go back to Ecuador in a heartbeat, and Surtrek is absolutely how I'd organize my trip to make it hassle free!

Oh, were there to be Six Stars to give! My friend and I were looking to do a boat-based Galapagos trip, as well as a few days in and around Quito. Normally, I don't much use tour companies, preferring to plan the trip mostly on my own. However, for a few reasons, and after some research, we ended up working with Maite at Surtrek to plan this trip. It was, simply, fantastic. From the start (and all the various questions over email) to the end (meeting us at the airport as we were headed back to the U.S., Surtrek (and, specially, Maite - and our guide, Juan and driver, Christian) was 100% top-notch, full recommend, no-doubt-about-it wonderful.Assuming you can book a flight to and from Quito, the rest you will not have to worry about one bit. They will work with you to tailor a trip exactly to your liking (we had a grand time doing just what we hoped to do) and, while on that trip, you'll have a blast. The enthusiasm and passion with which Juan lead the tours was unsurpassed. Christian was a great driver and, also, such fun. Maite was a true joy with which to work.I know this sounds a bit over the top, but it's also accurate. I fully recommend - trust me - you won't be disappointed.

Galapagos, Machu Picchu, and Easter Island! Everything about this trip was absolutely amazing. Surtrek arranged and organized everything for us - it was one of the best travel experiences we've had. We had guides and drivers who took very good care of us and made sure we got to see and do absolutely everything. I would HIGHLY recommend Surtrek for any South American travels!

Amazing honeymoon trip to the Galapagos! We loved our trip with Surtrek! We worked closely with Fernando to plan our honeymoon to the Galapagos. We didn't know exactly what we wanted to do; whether it was a cruise or a land tour. But, we knew we needed to plan it relatively soon or the opportunity would slip through the cracks as we got busy with work travel and the holiday season that was approaching. Fernando provided several options to choose from with a combination of cruise and land options; all within our budget. He provided his insight and suggestions along the way, which was much appreciated! We ultimately chose a 7-day, 6-night luxury yacht with an additional 3 nights on the island to explore by ourselves. It took a little more than a week from the time I contacted Surtrek to the time we finalized/booked the trip, There was always someone to guide us every step of the way, which was also appreciated as neither of us spoke Spanish. All the logistics worked out perfectly. 10/10 would recommend!

The trip of a lifetime!! We just had the most amazing adventure and it was all thanks to Maite at Surtrek! She patiently listened and crafted the very best experience for my husband and I! We visited Mindo, Cotopaxi, Baños, the Napo Cultural Center in the Amazon, and took a cruise around the Western Galapagos islands. From start to finish, Maite was so kind, so patient, and attended to my every question and concern. This was to be a celebratory vacation for many reasons, but principally our 25th wedding anniversary. Maite shared this with some of our hosts and we experienced beautiful celebrations at the restaurants and hotels we stayed at. It was the trip of a lifetime and we were so well cared for. When I expressed concerns regarding the reported unrest in Ecuador, Maite was able to reassure me that all would be well and that we would be very safe. We always felt very secure and comfortable. The private transportation and guides, the beauty and nature we witnessed, everything was amazing!! I cannot recommend Surtrek highly enough. We came home with over 1,800 pictures! Absolutely incredible! While you may be able to find cheaper options for travel, the quality of our experience with Surtrek was absolutely worth the price. If you want a quality experience, Surtrek is a fantastic choice!

Surtrek is Awesome When my wife & I were planning a trip to Galapagos and Peru, we contacted 3 or 4 different travel agencies. I found Surtrek to be the most helpful, knowledgeable, flexible and offered competitive pricing. I dealt directly with Ligia at Surtrek and cannot find enough words to describe the friendly and superior services she provided us. We had specific cities and sights we wanted to visit and Ligia mapped out an excellent itinerary for us, including hotels, flights, restaurants and sightseeing. We visited Quito, Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, in addition to an 8-day luxury cruise of the Galapagos islands. All arrangements, including flights, cruise, hotels, ground transportation, sight-seeing and guides were arranged by Surtrek. We were met at each arrival city by an expert guide and driver and the guide also helped us check in for our on-going flights at the end of each city tour. The guides were very knowledgeable, experienced and friendly, treated us very well and catered to our every need. Surtrek even helped secure reservations at high end restaurants in Lima, which are difficult to get unless booked well in advance. Surtrek made us alternate arrangements when one of our flights was canceled for mechanical reasons. Our trip lasted 18 days and all arrangements were flawless. To add a personal touch, Ligia treated us to a very nice lunch on our arrival in Quito. Thank you, Ligia, for making our Ecuador/Galapagos/Peru trip such a memorable, enjoyable and stress free one. I look forward to contacting you at Surtrek for our future South America travels.
