Bolivia’s high altitude mountain landscapes, vast salt flats, sprawling deserts and teeming cities combine to make this South American nation a challenge for traveling. Nonetheless, it’s these same spectacular sites and scenery that more than make up for any extra effort. You can discover all of this and more on this 13-day/12-night tour of the essential “jewels” of this enigmatic nation. The treasures that you will experience include sites such as the country’s “two” capitals (Sucre and La Paz), modern Santa Cruz, the UNESCO-declared World Heritage City of Potosi, the Villamar handicrafts center, the magnificent Siloli Desert, the quaint village of San Pedro de Quemez, the jaw-dropping Salar de Uyuni salt flat, as well as Sun Island on Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. During this South American travel experience, accommodations will be provided at 4 and 5-star hotels for the most part, though more basic lodging is only available in the remote areas of the country, such as the Siloli Desert. Notwithstanding – though perplexing, vexing, rough around the edges and occasionally taxing – this well-designed Bolivia tour will allow you to discover the superlative natural beauty of this nation: quintessential South America!

El Alto Airport – La Paz

AM: You will be welcomed at the El Alto International airport in La Paz, and driven to your hotel.

PM: Visit the ethnographic and folkloric museum in the afternoon, in the beautiful colonial residence of the Comte de Villaverde. A complete collection of fabrics from the different ethnic groups in Bolivia is exhibited there. (Duration: 3 hours)

AM: We will meet at the hotel at 9 a.m. to go on a “discovery tour” by private vehicle to see the most spectacular viewpoints in the city. From the bottom of the Choqueyapu River canyon, in the background, you will see the Royal Mountain Range “Giants” (the Huayna Potosi, Mururata and Illimani volcanos). This tour is particularly enjoyed by photo lovers. Start with the K´Illi K´Illi lookout point and the Laykakota Park (closed on Mondays) on the northwestern side of the city. We will then cross the Americas Bridge to go to the “Plaza de España” lookout point, in the colonial area of Sopocachi. From there, a steep descent leads to the “South Zone,” passing through Llojeta and the “Garden Cemetery,” and finally to the “Valley of the Moon,” a place where we can walk between psychedelic looking sandstone formations.

PM: In the afternoon, our vehicle will take us back to the city center and drop us off in the heart of La Paz’ colorful and animated Andean market. We will later return to the hotel on foot, accompanied by our guide.

AM: Leaving the hotel early in the morning, we will drive to Lake Titicaca. Once we arrive, we will board a catamaran for a cruise to Sun Island, the mythical birthplace of the Inca Empire. After breakfast on board the ship, we will disembark the vessel to visit Challapampa, a small isolated village on the north side of the island. The people of Challapampa receive visitors through an innovative program they have developed themselves, encouraging people to visit a typical home, school, chapel and a small museum they have organized. As a guest, you will be able to participate in authentic ancestral rituals, observe folklore demonstrations, and sail on board typical fishing boats.

PM: The program includes a walking tour of the Inca roads that lead to the Chinkana site. That evening you can also enjoy a romantic dinner by the candlelight on board the catamaran, where you will spend the night in one of its private cabins (with its own private bathroom).

AM: After a breakfast buffet, today we will continue sailing on Lake Titicaca and enjoying the majestic panorama to the south of Sun Island and the Inca Pilkokaina Palace. We will then visit the Inti Wata Cultural Complex, one of the main private tourist attractions in Bolivia. We will tour its underground Ekako museum, and a center of traditional medicine and workshop for building Totora boats, in addition to a number of other points of interest. You will discover the Inca Pachamama terraces and a variety of Andean camelids.

PM: In the afternoon, we will return to the city of La Paz along a scenic ground route, arriving there late in the day.

AM: ou will be driven from your hotel by private transport to the airport in La Paz two hours prior to your departure on your domestic flight (La Paz – Uyuni). Upon your arrival, we will visit the “train cemetery” on the outskirt of town, as well as stop at various villages, including the modern Culpina K urban site. We have lunch in San Cristobal, where you can visit the beautiful colonial church if it’s open. We will then traverse Rio Grande, the home to numerous vicuñas and ñandus (of the ostrich family), and arrive in the town of Villamar at the end of the day.

AM: We’ll head south for Laguna Colorada Lake. This body of water owes its intense red-brick color to the presence of light-sensitive phytoplankton. We will keep heading south for an excursion at the Sol de Mañana Geysers (el. 4,850 m.a.s.l.), at a volcanic crater from which sulfuric fumes and heavy water escape. We will then stop for breakfast in Polques before skirting Laguna Salada (“Salt Lake”) and crossing the Dali Desert (named after the scenery reminiscent of that artist’s paintings).

PM: This afternoon, we will reach the Blanca and Verde lagoons, at the foot of Juriques and Licancabur volcanoes (5,960 m.a.s.l.). What’s curious here is that the waters of Laguna Verde transform to a spectacular emerald color when the wind picks up. We will return to Laguna Colorada in the late afternoon. The road traverses the magnificent landscapes of the Siloli Desert and its famous “Arbol de Piedra” (Stone Tree), where you may be able to spot some rabbit-like viscachas.

AM: We will head north along the Chilean border along the scenic “Route of the Jewels,” which owes its name to all the lakes along its way (lakes Honda, Ch’arkota, Hedionda and Cañapa, a sanctuary to three varieties of flamingoes). We will stop at the lookout point of the Ollague volcano, which is still active and shelters one of the world’s highest open-pit copper mines. The road then descends from 4,200 to 3,600 meters in altitude.

PM: We will cross the small Salar de Chiguana salt flat, located at the foot of Tomasamil Volcano (5,900 m.a.s.l.), before reaching San Pedro de Quemez at the end of the day.

AM: A 2-hour trip from San Pedro will take us to the awe-inspiring Salar de Uyuni salt flat (3,650 m.a.s.l.). The atmosphere here is special, as the horizon seems to have no any limits, and the feeling is overwhelming. We will later head north to the “island” of Incahuasi, which is a volcanic outcrop covered with stromatolites (fossilized bacteria that evidenced the first traces of life on earth) and giant cacti. On the way, we will visit the “Cave of the Galaxy,” whose stalactites resemble lace.

PM: In the afternoon we will head east to Colchani, on the way visiting the “Salt Hotels” (closed since November 2001) and the salt mining operations in Colchani.

AM: We will depart at 8:30 a.m. for Potosí (a 5- to 6-hour journey on a dirt road), crossing the Cordillera Frailes mountain range before reaching the Imperial city in the afternoon. On the way, we will stop in Pulacayo, a small town that during the 19th century was the second largest silver mine on the continent; today it’s practically a ghost town; nevertheless, we can visit a museum the tells of the town’s glorious past. The end of the day will be at your leisure in Potosi (with a visit to the Santa Teresa Convent recommended).

AM: At your hotel in Potosi, we will meet at 9:00 in the lobby to begin a tour of the Casa de la Moneda (closed on Sunday afternoons and on Mondays), where the Spanish used to mint the coins for the crown until the 19th century. Departure from Potosi by private vehicle, leaving the high plateau behind to descend into the Chuquisaca Valley and cross the Pilcomayo River (separating Argentina and Paraguay further south) on the interesting Sucre Bridge. We will arrive in Sucre at the end of the day (after a 3-hour drive on a paved road).

PM: Later in the day we will visit the Espacio Cultural Origenes, which is restaurant set around a large stage where a colorful, high-energy dance show is put on almost every night of the week featuring traditional dances from Sucre and the rest of Bolivia. The elaborately dressed dancers act out Bolivian folkloric scenes, such courtship rituals and the struggle between good and evil. There is even a touch of humor in the show, for instance in the mockery of the Spanish conquistadors. The dances are fast-paced and highly polished.

AM: We will with your English-speaking guide in your hotel lobby at 9 a.m. to head out on a guided tour of this UNESCO-declared World Heritage City. The sites we will visit include the ethnographic textile museum (ASUR), the Casa de la Libertad (closed on Sunday afternoons and on Mondays), the Recoleta convent, the cathedral and San Felipe Nery monastery.

PM: At lunch, you will have a chance to sample salteñas, is a type of Bolivian baked empanada. These are savory pastries filled with beef, pork or chicken, mixed in a sweet, slightly spicy, and sometimes also containing peas, eggs, olives, raisins, potatoes and other ingredients). Vegetarian salteñas are sometimes available at certain restaurants. Typically, salteñas can be found in any town or city throughout the country, but each area has its variations. Cochabamba and Sucre, though, claim to have the best versions.

AM: You will be welcomed at the El Alto International airport in La Paz, and driven to your hotel.

PM: After you have had a chance to get situated, you will meet in the hotel lobby with your guide at 2:00 pm and then head out on a city tour of La Paz, a city located at almost 4,000 m.a.s.l. Some of the highlights will undoubtedly be Sagárnaga Street and its local handicrafts market (one of the most famous in South America), “Witches’ Street,” the San Pedro food market, the ancient area, and the historic-colonial district. Duration 3:00 hours

AM: Three hours prior to your departure, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven by private transport to La Paz’ El Alto Airport for your international flight home.

Wonderful trip We were so taken care of by Surtrek on a recent family trip to Equador and the Galapagos (travelers ages 8-77). Our Surtrek guide Maite worked with us to design a trip that focused on the items we wanted to be sure to see, and our timeframe and budget. Local guides and the boat tour she outsourced were wonderful. We felt so comfortable every step of the way for what would have otherwise been confusing travel. We definitely would recommend this company to others!

Ultimate fun, minimized hassles, amazing tour operation and travel agency I've had several people ask me what the highlight of our Quito, Ecuador and Galapagos Islands trip was, and frankly it's hard to pinpoint anyone thing so I tend to tell them: all 8 days! Our trip started with being greeted and picked up by our amazing travel agent, Maite. She was delightful from start to finish. Easy to communicate with via email, phone, and whatsapp. Maite consistently made sure we had what we needed. Surtrek supplied our driver, Christian, and our tour guide in Quito, Juan. Christian was a great driver. He knew the roads inside and out and we always felt safe. Juan probably knows everything about Ecuador -- and interestingly also Chicago! The time in Quito was fabulous. We enjoyed seeing the sites of the city and the cloud forest nearby. We ate delicious food and really had a treat with great weather. Maite and Christian got us to the airport for our trip to Galapagos and made sure we were smoothly through security. I've never had such personal service! Our time on the Horizon was fabulous. The staff onboard were top to bottom great. From the tour coordinator to the housekeeping to the culinary to the guide and of course the folks who drove the dinghys that got us to and from every activity. The food was top knotch with a lot of variety. The activities were fun and not overly strenuous, but also not lethargic. A nice balance.I was pleasantly surprised that in November there were no bugs, so no need for bug spray. Of course plenty of need for sun screen still! But the temps were great. High 70's and low 80's Fahrenheit. We saw basically everything in the Galapagos: penguins, blue and red footed boobies, frigate birds, owl, land and marine iguanas, sea lions everywhere, and of course the giant tortoises! During snorkeling we had [small and hammerhead] sharks in the water with us, sea lions in the water, schools of brilliant fish, and 1 amazing encounter with a sea turtle only feet away from my mask. It was breathtaking. Some folks say later in the summer is the best time because the water is clearer, but in our case the water was still quite clear and the animals were much closer to the surface, so it worked great. And the crew provided us with wet suits, so that helped with buoyancy and with warmth. After Galapagos we were shocked to have Maite and Christian back with us at the airport. We expected since our planned activities with Surtrek were done that we wouldn't see them again, but no they were there to meet us again and make sure we transited to our final hotel for a few hours sleep before the final trip home. It was a very pleasant surprise, and frankly just made it so much simpler than being "on our own".The coffee, the chocolate, the hummingbird sanctuary, all the beautiful sites. Dessert all the time. Just a really great trip!I'd go back to Ecuador in a heartbeat, and Surtrek is absolutely how I'd organize my trip to make it hassle free!

Oh, were there to be Six Stars to give! My friend and I were looking to do a boat-based Galapagos trip, as well as a few days in and around Quito. Normally, I don't much use tour companies, preferring to plan the trip mostly on my own. However, for a few reasons, and after some research, we ended up working with Maite at Surtrek to plan this trip. It was, simply, fantastic. From the start (and all the various questions over email) to the end (meeting us at the airport as we were headed back to the U.S., Surtrek (and, specially, Maite - and our guide, Juan and driver, Christian) was 100% top-notch, full recommend, no-doubt-about-it wonderful.Assuming you can book a flight to and from Quito, the rest you will not have to worry about one bit. They will work with you to tailor a trip exactly to your liking (we had a grand time doing just what we hoped to do) and, while on that trip, you'll have a blast. The enthusiasm and passion with which Juan lead the tours was unsurpassed. Christian was a great driver and, also, such fun. Maite was a true joy with which to work.I know this sounds a bit over the top, but it's also accurate. I fully recommend - trust me - you won't be disappointed.

Galapagos, Machu Picchu, and Easter Island! Everything about this trip was absolutely amazing. Surtrek arranged and organized everything for us - it was one of the best travel experiences we've had. We had guides and drivers who took very good care of us and made sure we got to see and do absolutely everything. I would HIGHLY recommend Surtrek for any South American travels!

Amazing honeymoon trip to the Galapagos! We loved our trip with Surtrek! We worked closely with Fernando to plan our honeymoon to the Galapagos. We didn't know exactly what we wanted to do; whether it was a cruise or a land tour. But, we knew we needed to plan it relatively soon or the opportunity would slip through the cracks as we got busy with work travel and the holiday season that was approaching. Fernando provided several options to choose from with a combination of cruise and land options; all within our budget. He provided his insight and suggestions along the way, which was much appreciated! We ultimately chose a 7-day, 6-night luxury yacht with an additional 3 nights on the island to explore by ourselves. It took a little more than a week from the time I contacted Surtrek to the time we finalized/booked the trip, There was always someone to guide us every step of the way, which was also appreciated as neither of us spoke Spanish. All the logistics worked out perfectly. 10/10 would recommend!

The trip of a lifetime!! We just had the most amazing adventure and it was all thanks to Maite at Surtrek! She patiently listened and crafted the very best experience for my husband and I! We visited Mindo, Cotopaxi, Baños, the Napo Cultural Center in the Amazon, and took a cruise around the Western Galapagos islands. From start to finish, Maite was so kind, so patient, and attended to my every question and concern. This was to be a celebratory vacation for many reasons, but principally our 25th wedding anniversary. Maite shared this with some of our hosts and we experienced beautiful celebrations at the restaurants and hotels we stayed at. It was the trip of a lifetime and we were so well cared for. When I expressed concerns regarding the reported unrest in Ecuador, Maite was able to reassure me that all would be well and that we would be very safe. We always felt very secure and comfortable. The private transportation and guides, the beauty and nature we witnessed, everything was amazing!! I cannot recommend Surtrek highly enough. We came home with over 1,800 pictures! Absolutely incredible! While you may be able to find cheaper options for travel, the quality of our experience with Surtrek was absolutely worth the price. If you want a quality experience, Surtrek is a fantastic choice!

Surtrek is Awesome When my wife & I were planning a trip to Galapagos and Peru, we contacted 3 or 4 different travel agencies. I found Surtrek to be the most helpful, knowledgeable, flexible and offered competitive pricing. I dealt directly with Ligia at Surtrek and cannot find enough words to describe the friendly and superior services she provided us. We had specific cities and sights we wanted to visit and Ligia mapped out an excellent itinerary for us, including hotels, flights, restaurants and sightseeing. We visited Quito, Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, in addition to an 8-day luxury cruise of the Galapagos islands. All arrangements, including flights, cruise, hotels, ground transportation, sight-seeing and guides were arranged by Surtrek. We were met at each arrival city by an expert guide and driver and the guide also helped us check in for our on-going flights at the end of each city tour. The guides were very knowledgeable, experienced and friendly, treated us very well and catered to our every need. Surtrek even helped secure reservations at high end restaurants in Lima, which are difficult to get unless booked well in advance. Surtrek made us alternate arrangements when one of our flights was canceled for mechanical reasons. Our trip lasted 18 days and all arrangements were flawless. To add a personal touch, Ligia treated us to a very nice lunch on our arrival in Quito. Thank you, Ligia, for making our Ecuador/Galapagos/Peru trip such a memorable, enjoyable and stress free one. I look forward to contacting you at Surtrek for our future South America travels.
