Highlights

San Cristobal Island: Airport – Puerto Baquerizo Moreno – Leon Dormido

AM: Upon arrival in the coastal town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristobal Island, our crew will be waiting at the airport to escort you by bus to the main dock and then by zodiac to your vessel anchored in the bay. After the welcome briefing and safety drill, a delicious buffet lunch will be served.

PM: Within a few hours, we reach Leon Dormido, (Spanish for sleeping lion), a remnant of a vertical tuff cone formation, rising 500 feet from the ocean. Erosion has split the rock providing a spectacular backdrop for photographs at sunset. As we circumnavigate the formation, you’ll easily spot blue-footed boobies, Nazca boobies, and frigatebirds on the cliffs. Guests on the Evolve visit La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado (Centro de Crianza Gianni Arismendy)-2. After a briefing on activities for the following day, join our Captain and crew for a cocktail reception. An elegant multi-course dinner, prepared by our accomplished chefs is served.

San Cristobal Island: Punta Pitt - Cerro Brujo

AM: We will reach the northeastern tip of San Cristobal to Punta Pitt, a tuff formation that serves as a nesting site for many seabirds, including all three types of boobies: Blue-footed, Nazca and Red-footed boobies, as well as both Frigate species, swallow-tailed gulls, Storm petrels, Shearwaters, Brown pelicans and a colony of sea lions. Punta Pitt is considered to be a first-class site for birding, on par with Genovesa Island. Here you can snorkel at Pitt Rock with sea lions and colorful fish such as King Angels and Surgeonfish. We will return to the yacht to cruise around Leon Dormido or “Kicker Rock,” a vertical tuff cone formation that rises abruptly almost 500 feet out of the ocean. On the cliffs, you will spot Blue-footed Boobies, Nazca Boobie, and Magnificent Frigatebirds. We will return to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner.

PM: During lunch, we will cruise to to Cerro Brujo, a breathtaking white coral beach. Considered one of the most spectacular in Galapagos, this beach is perfect for a peaceful walk given its expansive views and good bird watching. You will have an opportunity to kayak from the beach or swim with sea lions. A Zodiac ride will then take us through a cave called “The Cathedral.”

Española Island: Suarez Point - Gardner Bay

AM: We will disembark at Suarez Point, on Española Island, where you will witness the highest rate of endemic species in the Galapagos. Sea lions will noisily greet us as we land on their beach, as curious Hood mockingbirds peck at your shoelaces. From April to December, the waved albatross, found only on Espanola, perform their wild mating ritual. Colonies of blue-footed boobies engage in “sky-pointing” to show off for potential mates, as Nazca boobies busily care for their young. Stunning swallow-tailed gulls are the only nocturnal gulls in the world and fish at night. Red-billed tropicbirds take shelter under the cliffs. You will also find Darwin’s Finches, Galapagos Doves, and Galapagos Hawks. Observe a unique species of marine iguana identified with traces of red and green colorings. Colorful sally light-foot crabs crawl along the shoreline near to the famous “blow hole.”

PM: After lunch we will make a wet landing on Gardner Bay, on Española Island, to walk along a seemingly endless stretch of this white sandy beach where you’ll find large colonies of sea lions. There is no trail to follow so this is a chance to explore or take a long walk. You may find Galapagos Hawks, Darwin’s Finches or Hood Mockingbirds. Swim with sea lions right from the beach, explore the bay and islets by kayak or just relax on the beach. There’s an excellent snorkeling site off Gardner Islet with a colorful diversity of sea life near Tortuga Rock. By zodiac boat, explore caves covered with invertebrates. We will return to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner.

Floreana Island: Cormorant Point – Devil’s Crown – Post Office Bay – Baroness’ Lookout Point

AM: Step ashore at Cormorant Point, on Floreana Island, one of the few populated islands in the Galapagos. Floreana presents a rich human history with mystery and intrigue. Set foot on a green-sand beach alive with the sounds of sea lions, lava herons, Yellow-crowned night heron, Blue-footed boobies, and penguins. Follow a trail to a brackish lagoon, home to Bahama ducks, common stilts, Galapagos Flycatcher, Yellow warblers and Greater Flamingos, the pinkest in the world! Wind your way past a rich variety of plants including Morning Glory, Cut Leaf Daisies, Black, red and white mangroves, Palo Verde and Scalesia. The trail leads to a beach with power soft sand where sea turtles lay their eggs in the sand dunes and sting rays swim in the shallow water. After the walk, you will have an opportunity to snorkel at “Devil’s Crown” (Corona del Diablo), a broken volcanic cone that is one of the most beautiful places for snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands. The underwater world here includes reef sharks, starfish, sea turtles, sea lions and a host of tropical fish species.

PM: After lunch, we will visit Post Office Bay, not the most scenic but one of the most famous sites in the Galapagos. Here is where a post barrel was erected and put into use in the late 18th Century by English whaling vessels. You are invited to leave a postcard and to pick up any mail from your home area. There is a chance to swim from the beach with sea lions. In the late afternoon, we will take a Zodiac ride near Baroness Point where you will spot sea turtles and rays. We will return to the yacht for a briefing followed by dinner. Next, we will visit the Baroness’ Lookout Point, where the controversial “Baroness” Eloisa de Wagner – one of the first human inhabitants in the Galapagos Islands – would spend several hours daily observing whales and dolphins.

Santa Cruz Island: The Highlands - Charles Darwin Research Station

AM: We will travel by bus to the highlands of Santa Cruz Island. The scenery gradually changes as we wind our way through all seven vegetation zones found in Galapagos. Here, we will visit the tortoise reserve at “Las Primicias,” one of the private farms in the highlands where you will encounter giant tortoises in their natural habitat. We will stop at “the tunnels,” the largest lava tubes found in the Galapagos. We will also visit “The Twins,” a pair of large pit craters where you may see the red male vermilion flycatchers.

PM: Next, we will visit the Charles Darwin Research Station, where you will see the tortoise and land iguana enclosures, as well as the breeding center with new hatchlings and miniature tortoises not yet ready to be repatriated. The tortoise “Lonesome George” is no longer with us, but the tortoise named “Diego” (also dubbed “The Professor”) is there and has been more successful at mating. The town of Puerto Ayora is the social heart of the islands with the largest population of 24,000. After lunch and briefing on board, we will return to town to shop for souvenirs or stop at an internet cafe. You will have the option of remaining in town or returning to the boat for dinner. There will also be transportation from the yacht to town later in the evening.

Bartolome Island // Chinese Hat Island

AM: We will disembark onto Bartolome Island, where it seems like you’re walking on the moon, as this young island is inhospitable to most plants and animals. After a dry landing, we will climb for 30 minutes to the summit of a once active volcano. Along the way, we will pause to marvel at lava bombs, spatter cones and cinder cones. From the top of the wooden stairs, you can gaze out across the landscape for a panoramic view of the island and “Pinnacle Rock,” an eroded tuff cone. Crystal clear water is an invitation to take a Zodiac ride or snorkel from the beach with schools of tropical fish and Galapagos penguins.

PM: After lunch, we will travel to the southern tip of Santiago Island to visit Chinese Hat Island, which owes its name to its shape. After a wet-landing onto the beach with sea lion colonies, the trail gives way to a primeval landscape of volcanic rubble, which includes cracked lava formations and lava tubes. Here, you will find marine iguanas and pairs of oystercatchers. You can choose to snorkel at a site that is frequented by Galapagos penguins.

South Plaza Island // North Seymour Island

AM: Today we will visit South Plaza Island, a small geological uplift with tall cliffs offering spectacular views. After a dry landing, the trail leads us through Prickly Pear or Opuntia and Sesuvium forests. Here you can find Galapagos land Iguanas feeding on cactus leaves. Toward the end of the hill, you will encounter a colony of bachelor sea lions. The dominant bulls are in various stages of recovery from battles lost over prime beach territory. You will also find Swallow tailed gulls, Shearwaters and Red-billed tropicbirds who build their nests along the cliffs.

PM: After lunch, we will make a dry landing at North Seymour, a small geological uplift. We will follow a trail that leads us to Swallow-tailed gulls, Blue-footed boobies and the endemic land iguanas. Visit the largest colony of Magnificent Frigate birds found in Galapagos. As we stroll along the beach, we will find Marine Iguanas and sea lions body surfing the northern swells. We will return to the yacht for the Captain’s Farwell cocktail party and dinner as well as a special slide show presentation by your guides.

San Cristobal Island: Interpretation Center - Airport

AM: By bus, we will travel to the Interpretation Center opened on San Cristobal Island in 1999. Here you will gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the islands. Afterwards, we will spend time at the port before heading to the airport for your flight back to the mainland.

Genovesa Island: Prince Philip’s Steps - Darwin Bay

AM: After breakfast on deck or dining inside the ship, we will make a dry-landing on Genovesa Island at Prince Philip’s Steps. Red-footed boobies nest here in Palo Santo trees and Nazca boobies’ nest near the trail. In an open lava field, you will find Storm Petrels in large numbers. If you are lucky, you will see the elusive Short-eared owl. Look for beautiful Red-billed Tropicbirds found in the crevices along the cliff by kayak or Zodiac. You can choose to swim or snorkel from the beach with sea lions in these northern warmer waters; or, for those with experience, we will offer snorkeling in deeper water. Return to the yacht for briefing and dinner before we will cross the equator.

PM: We will spend the entire day on Genovesa Island, considered to be one of the most spectacular islands in Galapagos for it bird species. We will make a wet-landing on Darwin Bay, a coral sand beach where Swallow-tailed and Lava gulls gather near the tide pools. Enter a forest of Opuntia cactus and mangroves where colonies of Great Frigatebirds nest. The males inflate their red-throated pouches to attract females as they fly overhead. The trail leads through a rich intertidal zone where you will find a wide diversity of wildlife.

Santa Cruz Island: Bachas Beach - Dragon Hill

AM: Today we will visit the beach called Bachas, which is the Spanish translation for “barges.” There is a long stretch of a soft white sand beach and interior lagoons where you will find the Greater Flamingo. There is also a wonderful chance to snorkel here from the beach.

PM: Located on the northern tip of Santa Cruz is Dragon Hill. Along the trail, you will find Darwin Finches, Galapagos Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, Audubon Shearwater and the endemic land iguanas, orange-yellow in color with large spines along their backs, which were once part of the Darwin Station’s breeding program. You will also find pink flamingos feeding in the salt-water lagoon. Other lagoon birds include Stilts, Pintail ducks, Sandpipers and more. From the top of the hill, you will enjoy a majestic view of the bay island covered in Opuntia cactus, Palo Santo and Cordia Lutea (muyuyu). After the briefing and dinner, we will sail to the western islands and cross the equator line for the second time.

Isabela Island: Punta Vicente Roca - Urbina Bay

AM: Located at the “mouth” of the head of the seahorse that forms the northern part of Isabela Island is Punta Vicente Roca, an interesting rock formation. Here, the remnants of an ancient volcano form two turquoise coves, with a bay that’s well-protected from the ocean swells. With a bit of luck, you can see Galapagos penguins, while Masked- and Blue-footed boobies, as well as pelicans, sit perched along the point and its sheer cliffs, while flightless cormorants inhabit the shoreline. The upwelling of currents of cool water in this part of the Galapagos gives rise to an abundance of marine life, which makes Vicente Roca Point a great area for deep-water snorkeling.

PM: Urbina Bay is home to the very large and colorful Galapagos land iguanas, and occasionally giant tortoises, Darwin finches, though Brown pelicans and Flightless cormorants also nest here. Giant marine Iguanas are seen along the coast. You may encounter penguins while snorkeling here. You might just spot the dorsal fin of a Mola Mola, an odd-looking giant sunfish. Return to the yacht for briefing and dinner.

Fernandina Island: Punta Espinosa // Isabela Island: Tagus Cove

AM: We will make a semi-wet landing at Espinoza Point, on Fernandina Island, the youngest and most pristine island in the Galapagos, and having no introduced mammals. Recent lava flows formed by an active volcano stretch their way around the coast. Hundreds of marine iguanas, the largest colony in Galapagos, bask in the sun along the rugged shoreline. Observe sea lion harems with resident bulls carefully guarding their territory. Flightless cormorants build their nest on the point while Galapagos hawks fly overhead. There will be a chance to snorkel here with sea turtles.

PM: After a dry landing, we will visit Isabela Island’s notorious Tagus Cove, which was historically used as an anchoring place for pirates, buccaneers and whalers. Still exiting here is some graffiti that is believed to have been left by 19th-century pirates …a curious reminder of an intriguing past. Perched on the ledges of the cliffs around this deep blue bay, you can observe a large number of Blue-footed boobies, as well as marine iguanas, brown pelicans, brown noddy terns, swallow-tailed gulls and tiny Galapagos penguins (members of the only penguin species in the world to extend its range into the northern hemisphere along the equator). A steep trail also passes through an area of dry vegetation and volcanic landscapes with scalesia woods and cactuses.

Rabida Island / Santa Cruz Island: Black Turtle Cove

AM: In the morning we will take a trip to the dark-rust-colored beach of the small, volcanic Rabida Island. A short path leads to a small lagoon that is popular among flamingos. This beach is one of the most beautiful snorkeling places in the Galapagos Islands and it has a great abundance of tropical fish and sea lions. Rábida Island is also the only site where Batfish live.

PM: Today we will visit Black Turtle Cove, a nesting site for sea turtles, which peak their heads above the surface of the water while fish and other forms of marine life circle below. With luck, the calm water will allow you to see different types of sharks (like the Whitetip reef shark) and schools of golden-colored Mustard rays. There are a number of mangrove forests here as well.

We will stop at “the tunnels,” the largest lava tubes found in the Galapagos. Look out for the bright red male vermilion flycatchers.

PM: After lunch, we will have our last briefing. Today we will visit the Charles Darwin Research Station. See all three tortoise corrals, in addition to the breeding center with new hatchlings and miniature tortoises not yet ready to be repatriated. Scientists from all over the globe work at the station and conduct biological research from anatomy to zoology. We will stop at Van Straelen Hall where there are exhibits and a short video presentation. The town of Puerto Ayora is the social heart of the islands with the largest population, 24,000 inhabitants. This evening you have the option to return to your yacht for a buffet dinner or remain in town. Those who return to the yacht will be provided zodiacs to return to town later to shop for souvenirs or stop at an internet café. Those zodiacs will also be available to return you to the yacht.

San Cristobal Island: Interpretation Center – Airport

AM: By bus, we will visit the Interpretation Center opened on San Cristobal Island in 1999. Here you will gain a more complete understanding of the natural and human history of the Islands. Afterwards, we will spend some time in port before heading to the San Cristobal airport for our flight back to the mainland departing before noon time.

 Verificada Wonderful trip We were so taken care of by Surtrek on a recent family trip to Equador and the Galapagos (travelers ages 8-77). Our Surtrek guide Maite worked with us to design a trip that focused on the items we wanted to be sure to see, and our timeframe and budget. Local guides and the boat tour she outsourced were wonderful. We felt so comfortable every step of the way for what would have otherwise been confusing travel.  Verificada Ultimate fun, minimized hassles, amazing tour operation and travel agency I've had several people ask me what the highlight of our Quito, Ecuador and Galapagos Islands trip was, and frankly it's hard to pinpoint anyone thing so I tend to tell them: all 8 days! Our trip started with being greeted and picked up by our amazing travel agent, Maite. She was delightful from start to finish. Easy to communicate with via email, phone, and whatsapp. Maite consistently made sure we had what we needed. Surtrek supplied our driver, Christian, and our tour guide in Quito, Juan. Christian was a great driver. He knew the roads inside and out and we always felt safe. Juan probably knows everything about Ecuador -- and interestingly also Chicago! The time in Quito was fabulous. We enjoyed seeing the sites of the city and the cloud forest nearby. We ate delicious food and really had a treat with great weather. Maite and Christian got us to the airport for our trip to Galapagos and made sure we were smoothly through security. I've never had such personal service!Our time on the Horizon was fabulous. The staff onboard were top to bottom great. From the tour coordinator to the housekeeping to the culinary to the guide and of course the folks who drove the dinghys that got us to and from every activity. The food was top knotch with a lot of variety. The activities were fun and not overly strenuous, but also not lethargic. A nice balance.I was pleasantly surprised that in November there were no bugs, so no need for bug spray. Of course plenty of need for sun screen still! But the temps were great. High 70's and low 80's Fahrenheit. We saw basically everything in the Galapagos: penguins, blue and red footed boobies, frigate birds, owl, land and marine iguanas, sea lions everywhere, and of course the giant tortoises! During snorkeling we had [small and hammerhead] sharks in the water with us, sea lions in the water, schools of brilliant fish, and 1 amazing encounter with a sea turtle only feet away from my mask. It was breathtaking. Some folks say later in the summer is the best time because the water is clearer, but in our case the water was still quite clear and the animals were much closer to the surface, so it worked great. And the crew provided us with wet suits, so that helped with buoyancy and with warmth. After Galapagos we were shocked to have Maite and Christian back with us at the airport. We expected since our planned activities with Surtrek were done that we wouldn't see them again, but no they were there to meet us again and make sure we transited to our final hotel for a few hours sleep before the final trip home. It was a very pleasant surprise, and frankly just made it so much simpler than being "on our own".The coffee, the chocolate, the hummingbird sanctuary, all the beautiful sites. Dessert all the time. Just a really great trip!I'd go back to Ecuador in a heartbeat, and Surtrek is absolutely how I'd organize my trip to make it hassle free!

 Verificada Oh, were there to be Six Stars to give! My friend and I were looking to do a boat-based Galapagos trip, as well as a few days in and around Quito. Normally, I don't much use tour companies, preferring to plan the trip mostly on my own. However, for a few reasons, and after some research, we ended up working with Maite at Surtrek to plan this trip. It was, simply, fantastic.From the start (and all the various questions over email) to the end (meeting us at the airport as we were headed back to the U.S., Surtrek (and, specially, Maite - and our guide, Juan and driver, Christian) was 100% top-notch, full recommend, no-doubt-about-it wonderful.Assuming you can book a flight to and from Quito, the rest you will not have to worry about one bit. They will work with you to tailor a trip exactly to your liking (we had a grand time doing just what we hoped to do) and, while on that trip, you'll have a blast. The enthusiasm and passion with which Juan lead the tours was unsurpassed. Christian was a great driver and, also, such fun. Maite was a true joy with which to work.I know this sounds a bit over the top, but it's also accurate. I fully recommend - trust me - you won't be disappointed.

 Verificada Galapagos, Machu Picchu, and Easter Island! Everything about this trip was absolutely amazing. Surtrek arranged and organized everything for us - it was one of the best travel experiences we've had. We had guides and drivers who took very good care of us and made sure we got to see and do absolutely everything. I would HIGHLY recommend Surtrek for any South American travels!

 Verificada Amazing honeymoon trip to the Galapagos! We loved our trip with Surtrek! We worked closely with Fernando to plan our honeymoon to the Galapagos. We didn't know exactly what we wanted to do; whether it was a cruise or a land tour. But, we knew we needed to plan it relatively soon or the opportunity would slip through the cracks as we got busy with work travel and the holiday season that was approaching. Fernando provided several options to choose from with a combination of cruise and land options; all within our budget. He provided his insight and suggestions along the way, which was much appreciated! We ultimately chose a 7-day, 6-night luxury yacht with an additional 3 nights on the island to explore by ourselves. It took a little more than a week from the time I contacted Surtrek to the time we finalized/booked the trip, There was always someone to guide us every step of the way, which was also appreciated as neither of us spoke Spanish. All the logistics worked out perfectly. 10/10 would recommend!

 Verificada The trip of a lifetime!! We just had the most amazing adventure and it was all thanks to Maite at Surtrek! She patiently listened and crafted the very best experience for my husband and I! We visited Mindo, Cotopaxi, Baños, the Napo Cultural Center in the Amazon, and took a cruise around the Western Galapagos islands. From start to finish, Maite was so kind, so patient, and attended to my every question and concern. This was to be a celebratory vacation for many reasons, but principally our 25th wedding anniversary. Maite shared this with some of our hosts and we experienced beautiful celebrations at the restaurants and hotels we stayed at. It was the trip of a lifetime and we were so well cared for. When I expressed concerns regarding the reported unrest in Ecuador, Maite was able to reassure me that all would be well and that we would be very safe. We always felt very secure and comfortable. The private transportation and guides, the beauty and nature we witnessed, everything was amazing!! I cannot recommend Surtrek highly enough. We came home with over 1,800 pictures! Absolutely incredible! While you may be able to find cheaper options for travel, the quality of our experience with Surtrek was absolutely worth the price. If you want a quality experience, Surtrek is a fantastic choice!

 Verificada Surtrek is Awesome When my wife & I were planning a trip to Galapagos and Peru, we contacted 3 or 4 different travel agencies. I found Surtrek to be the most helpful, knowledgeable, flexible and offered competitive pricing. I dealt directly with Ligia at Surtrek and cannot find enough words to describe the friendly and superior services she provided us. We had specific cities and sights we wanted to visit and Ligia mapped out an excellent itinerary for us, including hotels, flights, restaurants and sightseeing. We visited Quito, Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Lake Titicaca, in addition to an 8-day luxury cruise of the Galapagos islands. All arrangements, including flights, cruise, hotels, ground transportation, sight-seeing and guides were arranged by Surtrek. We were met at each arrival city by an expert guide and driver and the guide also helped us check in for our on-going flights at the end of each city tour. The guides were very knowledgeable, experienced and friendly, treated us very well and catered to our every need. Surtrek even helped secure reservations at high end restaurants in Lima, which are difficult to get unless booked well in advance. Surtrek made us alternate arrangements when one of our flights was canceled for mechanical reasons. Our trip lasted 18 days and all arrangements were flawless.To add a personal touch, Ligia treated us to a very nice lunch on our arrival in Quito. Thank you, Ligia, for making our Ecuador/Galapagos/Peru trip such a memorable, enjoyable and stress free one. I look forward to contacting you at Surtrek for our future South America travels.
